Well-known educationist, Late Sardar Pratap Singh Kairon, the then Chief Minister of Punjab, laid his vision for The Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research and owes to the foundation of such reputed institution. The establishment was supported was the first Prime Minister of India Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru according to whom the institutions of scientific knowledge were considered as a place of worship and as temples of learning.
Started in the year 1962 and inaugurated by Pt Jawahar Lal Nehru, the hospital was named “Nehru Hospital” on 7th July 1963. Originally it was under the Government of undivided Punjab but later after the reformation of the state, The Union Territory of Chandigarh now holds the administrative control of the institute.
